Vintage 2023
Our Zweigelt selection is an Ortswein from Tattendorf, Thermenregion DAC. We picked it on 27 September 2023. April had been cool in Austria, and the rain the vines needed after a very dry winter only came in the second half of the month.

Village wine from Tattendorf
Zweigelt selection 2023 is a village wine (Ortswein) of the Thermenregion DAC: its grapes come from vineyards in the municipality of Tattendorf, so it carries the village rather than a single vineyard in its name. The vineyards there lie on pure gravel that holds hardly any water and naturally has little humus. Its rows are green all year, sown with clover, phacelia and buckwheat instead of grass. We use no herbicides.
The 2023 harvest
The must for Zweigelt selection 2023 measured 20 °KMW: the Klosterneuburg must scale shows how much sugar is in the grape juice, one degree being roughly one per cent.
What the figures say
Zweigelt selection 2023 has 12.9 % vol. alcohol, 3.7 g/l residual sugar and 5.4 g/l acidity. It is made in a dry style, which under wine law means no more than 4 g/l residual sugar, or up to 9 g/l if the acidity is at most 2 g/l lower.
The sugar-free extract of Zweigelt selection 2023 is 26.0 g/l: everything dissolved in the wine apart from water, alcohol and sugar, such as minerals, acids and tannins. In the laboratory, it showed 35 mg/l free and 65 mg/l total sulphur. It received the official inspection number N 20537/24 after being analysed in the laboratory and tasted by an official panel.
The Selection line
Zweigelt selection 2023 belongs to our Selection line, which is allowed to mature longer than Classic. It spends twelve months in used wooden barrels after fermentation.
